About Utility Services
The Sewer Utility provides service to the Sanitary Sewer Service Area in Mequon that are not using septic and mound systems. The Mequon Water Utility services several communities in the area including Mequon, Thiensville and Bayside. There are still quite a few properties in this area that use a private well or water trust.
At your property location, you may receive both services, only water, only sewer or neither. If you are interested to find out what services are currently provided or available to you, please give us a call.
The City of Mequon’s overall mission is the provision of quality public services and adoption of thoughtful policies that serve to enhance and maintain the unique quality of life of our community. Through the judicious use of community resources, the City is committed to managing growth, efficiently using tax dollars and making wise investments in our future. Our success depends on our ability to offer quality and value to our taxpayers with the highest standards of accountability, responsiveness, economy and integrity.

Water Service Line Material Inventory
Lead is not found in Mequon's source water, Lake Michigan, and it is not found in our treated drinking water. Lead may enter drinking water at a house or building if it dissolves from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing, especially when water stands unused for several hours. To prevent lead from dissolving into the water, Milwaukee Water Works and the North Shore Water Commission add phosphate that forms a protective coating inside pipes. The Mequon Water Utility has NO lead water mains and NO lead service lines. Lead may be found in home plumbing – in some solder used with older copper plumbing (before 1986) and in faucets and fittings of brass which contain some lead (prior to 2014). If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children.
See the Mequon Water Utility Service Line Material Inventory (PDF) for a full listing of every service in the Utility and the service line material. The inventory was developed by reviewing the following sources:
- Previous Material Evaluations: The Utility did not identify any lead services in any previous iterations of the required lead sampling.
- Construction Records and Plumbing Permits: The City and Villages served by the Mequon Water Utility enforce SPS plumbing codes which have not allowed lead laterals since before the water utility began service in 1998.
- Water System Records: Mequon Water Utility Standard Specifications for Land Development has not allowed lead as a service lateral material since the inception of the water utility. HDPE plastic has been the required service lateral material since 1998. Private plumbing code has also allowed the use of copper as an approved plumbing material for the private service lateral
- Distribution System Inspections and Records: A combination of service line repair records, meter installation records, distribution system maps, and other inspection records were reviewed for recorded material information.
- Lead Ban: The Federal Lead Ban of 1986 was used. Any service installed after 1986 is non-lead.
- General staff knowledge: this included institutional and anecdotal knowledge gathered from staff experience. No Utility employee has ever encountered a lead lateral in the Utility.
