Bird City Wisconsin is an initiative to encourage conservation of birds and habitat preservation and restoration. The program's goal is to encourage communities in Wisconsin to implement sound bird conservation practices by offering public recognition to those that succeed in (a) enhancing the environment for birds and (b) educate the public about the interactions between birds and people and about the contributions birds make to a healthy community. The City of Mequon continues to participate in Bird City Wisconsin since 2014 and currently holds the Bird City designation.
Did You Know?
The two biggest killers of birds are windows and cats. Birds fly into windows as they seek vegetation reflected in the glass. Where people see reflections in glass or the scene that lies on the other side of a window, birds just see habitat and, flying toward it, they collide with the glass. These collisions kill more than 1 billion birds each year in the United States alone. You can find out more about Glass Collisions Products, such as oil-based pens and window decals, from the American Bird Conservancy Website.
After windows, roaming and feral cats are the next largest cause of bird mortality. For this reason, many organizations encourage people to keep their cats indoors. Outdoor cats kill an estimated 2.4 billion birds in the United States each year. Learn more about the "Trap, Neuter, Release" as a tool to reduce feral cat numbers by visiting the American Bird Conservancy website for more information.
The City of Mequon celebrates and observes World Migratory Bird Day in conjunction with the City’s Arbor Day Festivities. This year, those festivities will be held on April 26, 2026. Public information will be provided about migratory bird conservation and the importance of taking action to protect and conserve migratory birds and their habitats throughout the community.
